Life Thru the Macro: Beaters Made for Lickin’…

My family has a tradition to go around the Thanksgiving Dinner table and say the things that we are most grateful for. MANY have accused that tradition of being ‘tacky’ and I must admit that in my youth I did my fair share of griping and groaning. But nonetheless, I am proud to say that…

Life Thru the Macro: Photographing the Photographer…

… is MUCH harder than you might think. Nate’s Mom can firmly attest to the fact that she has been driven to tears on an occassion or two when trying to photograph her handsome, though VERY uncooperative sons. This is what I get when I attempt to photograph my handsome, though uncooperative husband: Hopefully our…

Jen Perkes - Oh….Luisa….I feel your pain!

I recall so clearly years ago when I was striving for a fall New England family photo for our Christmas cards. I had found a grassy road, cutting through beautiful oak trees and lined with stone walls–the setting was perfect. But the boys–all 5 of them–couldn't get serious enough to stand still. They were goosing each other, standing on their tippy toes so that they could be the tallest and all around acting like goofs. I started to cry, packed up my gear, threw it in the back of the Jeep and began an emotional breakdown.

You are handling Nate with much more dignity and finesse!! Plus, you understand that his many "faces" are actually one of his most endearing and interesting parts about him. After Nate, photographing your little guy will be a cinch!!

Hugs & loves,

Mom

Pappa Perkes - Best work yet! Great, rich color and texture!

Favorite photos: [Counting each set as a photo], ONE [kiss under the stairs!]; EIGHT [her on his back! INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL!]; TWENTY [standing in the hills--AMAZING COMPOSITION!].

Other "honorable mentions": NINE, TEN, EIGHTEEN, & NINETEEN. Oh, heck! They are all good!

Can't wait to see what you and Luisa are able to do photographing this beautiful couple at their wedding in Mexico!

11/19/2010 - 12:35 pm

Aunt Tea - i truly love your eye. do you mind saying which lens and aperture you were using in the field?
really. beautiful.

11/19/2010 - 12:54 pm

Nate Perkes - @Aunt Tea…for sure! Don't mind at all. I'll treat each photo group as a single photo so there are 22 in all.

Photos 1-10 (All the downtown shots): 50mm at 1.4
Photos 11-14: 70-200 at 2.8
Photos 15-19: 50mm at 1.4 (notice the different perspective in that first shot even though the framing was almost the exact same as the 70-200 above shots…blog post on this coming soon!)
Photos 20-22: 70-200 at 2.8.

HUGELY important note (at least I think so): Every image in this post that is taken with the 70-200 is wracked out to 200mm. I will not put this lens on (usually), unless I am using it at 200mm. This is just me, and my personal style, but I will take many steps back so that I can use this lens at 200mm. Again, blog post on this coming soon…hope this helps and makes sense. : )

11/19/2010 - 1:07 pm

Aunt Tea - That was a fabulous answer! Thank you! While I can't wrangle that lovely 70-200 into my budget yet, it helps to ponder the what and how of things. I love that you go all the way out to 200, totally makes sense to me.(I usually lurk-found you from creativelive. wish you posted more LOL-and your mom!)

11/19/2010 - 2:17 pm

cindy - Loved them all!
I'm the same way, when the 70-200 goes on, it's all the way out baby!! And I shoot with the 50 1.2THose two lenses are the absolute BEST!!!

Aruba Adventures

I feel like I’m a pretty lucky guy. I get to do what I love (capture images), with the person I love (Luisa of course!), in really cool places that I love (New England, the Caribbean, Mexico, Costa Rica, West Coast etc.). I feel blessed. Life is good. I’ve been lucky enough to be able…

Life Thru the Macro: Things NOT To Say about Your Pregnant Wife…

“It’s the craziest thing… but I swear EVERY single day now, she’s just getting bigger and bigger.” We ALL had a good laugh at that one, especially me, because it’s SO TRUE. Aside from that one verbal slip-up, Nate has been taking care of me fantastically. Last night he tucked me into bed with EVERY…

Photo of the week: SURFING!

I returned yesterday from meeting a client in Laguna Niguel, California. It was 35 and raining when I left Boise. California was 75 and GORGEOUS! It was so nice to visit, even though it was a short visit. I met with the client at the Ritz Carlton at Dana Point, and took some time before…

Jasmin - Wow Nate! What a great shot! It reminds me of my honeymoon which I spend in California this summer! Thanks fot his photo of the week, it was highly appreciated during a bad, cold, stormy and rainy fall day in Germany!

CT - Hey Nate,
You said you typically shoot wide open (2.8 or lower) how do manage to get your focus spot on when the objects are moving so much?
Do you focus and recompose that fast?

Jeff, Blu and Anna

Meet Jeff, his wife Blu, and their adorable daughter Anna. Luisa and I have been friends with Jeff and Blu since we moved to Idaho, and I was excited at the opportunity to take their family pictures. I actually did a shoot of Anna last year, that you can see here on the blog…seems like…

Laura - Her little '3' hand is so cute, and her Big Eyes face/open mouth – awesome.

11/10/2010 - 8:16 am

Kate Perkes - Oh she is so stinkin cute! Those eyes are something else. Great shots Nate!

Crissie - Adorable! You captured such beautiful emotion!

11/10/2010 - 12:33 pm

Anonymous - Wow this are awesome! So crisp and gorgeous colors, may I ask what lens did you use? very beautiful, congrats!!

11/10/2010 - 3:11 pm

Nate Perkes - Thanks guys! All of the family shots (except the b&w where they're sitting in the grass) were taken with the 70-200. And all the shots (except the leaves throwing) of just Anna are with the 50mm usually at 1.4.

11/10/2010 - 3:27 pm

Nicole Peterson - I absolutely love this little cherub. Want to put her in my pocket and carry her everywhere :)

Great to know that this session was done with the 70-200. I rarely use it for portraits because of the weight but it is such a great lens and gives beautiful results. Definitely need to use it more.

11/10/2010 - 7:20 pm

Katie Perkes - Nate, I am your cousin Tyson's wife and I just have to say that I love your photography! You are such an inspiration and really know how to capture people just as they are! Your images are so beautiful.

11/11/2010 - 4:27 pm

Ken and Jen Perkes - Very beautiful, Nate! Hard to pick a favorite, but my top three are [going from top to bottom and considering each grouping as a set]: 5th down, black and white of Anna–in her own wonderful world!; 9th down, family walking away–BEAUTIFUL!; and 11th down, family in the grass–wonderful light and texture!

I also love the Cliff Mautner-like photo of them on the bench with a lot of landscape over them [3rd down]; bright-eyed Anna [8th down to the right]; and the black and white of Anna throwing leaves. And finally, the 14th down, family at waters edge is very nice.

Great job!

–Pops
