The Sessions Family | Boise Family Photographer

I had a great shoot with the Sessions family the other day and wanted to post a few of my favorites.  I don’t take on very many family sessions each year, and I’m so glad I had the chance to photograph these guys!  I also got the chance to try out a new location.  Win…

My Own Family Photo Shoot | Boise Family Photographer

Luisa and I have been meaning to take a few pictures of our little family lately.  We seriously had SO much fun!  We had a few locations here in Star that we wanted to try.  Unfortunately the first two home owners weren’t home to ask if we could shoot on their property.  And according to…

Black Friday Shoot

Jaymie contacted me a few months ago asking me if I would do a family shoot on Black Friday. Of course! She lives in Alaska, and was coming to town for Thanksgiving to be with her two twin daughters, and her sister and niece. And of course Rosie the dog came along too. Being with…

Jeff, Blu and Anna

Meet Jeff, his wife Blu, and their adorable daughter Anna. Luisa and I have been friends with Jeff and Blu since we moved to Idaho, and I was excited at the opportunity to take their family pictures. I actually did a shoot of Anna last year, that you can see here on the blog…seems like…

Kate Perkes - Oh she is so stinkin cute! Those eyes are something else. Great shots Nate!

Crissie - Adorable! You captured such beautiful emotion!

Anonymous - Wow this are awesome! So crisp and gorgeous colors, may I ask what lens did you use? very beautiful, congrats!!

11/10/2010 - 3:11 pm

Nate Perkes - Thanks guys! All of the family shots (except the b&w where they're sitting in the grass) were taken with the 70-200. And all the shots (except the leaves throwing) of just Anna are with the 50mm usually at 1.4.

11/10/2010 - 3:27 pm

Nicole Peterson - I absolutely love this little cherub. Want to put her in my pocket and carry her everywhere :)

Great to know that this session was done with the 70-200. I rarely use it for portraits because of the weight but it is such a great lens and gives beautiful results. Definitely need to use it more.

11/10/2010 - 7:20 pm

Katie Perkes - Nate, I am your cousin Tyson's wife and I just have to say that I love your photography! You are such an inspiration and really know how to capture people just as they are! Your images are so beautiful.

11/11/2010 - 4:27 pm

Ken and Jen Perkes - Very beautiful, Nate! Hard to pick a favorite, but my top three are [going from top to bottom and considering each grouping as a set]: 5th down, black and white of Anna–in her own wonderful world!; 9th down, family walking away–BEAUTIFUL!; and 11th down, family in the grass–wonderful light and texture!

I also love the Cliff Mautner-like photo of them on the bench with a lot of landscape over them [3rd down]; bright-eyed Anna [8th down to the right]; and the black and white of Anna throwing leaves. And finally, the 14th down, family at waters edge is very nice.

Great job!

Studio Hera Bell - Fantastic shots.

Wells Family

Luisa and I recently returned home from photographing a wedding in Aruba, and while travel is nice, and Aruba was MORE than wonderful, it is so great to come home. I love where I live, and I love the fall. The leaves for the past few weeks have been a gorgeous blend of colors. Right…

Ken and Jen Perkes - These are great, Nate! My favorites: First one on the bridge [great lines!]; kids running in front of parents [pure delight!]; and the black and white of the husband and wife [still very much in love!]. The rest are nice too, but those are some of my favorites. Beautiful family! Amazing photographer!

Laura - Beautiful work Nate! The colors are stunning. Here in MN, we are way past our peak of fall colors – we're in the middle of 60+ mph winds and three days of straight rain.

I know you have said you often shoot wide open at 1.4 on your 50. With these family shots, are you stopping up or still at 1.4. Everyone seems in focus so I'm guessing you stop up some.

Very awesome work!

10/26/2010 - 3:12 pm

Nate Perkes - Awesome questions Laura. You actually got me curios, so I went back to check the Metadata of each photo and I'll include it here. I'll treat each group of photos as one, whether it's one up, two up or four up. I shot A LOT of this session with my 70-200 which I ALWAYS leave wide open no matter what, since it's a 2.8, and I'm usually using it at 200mm.

Picture 1: 70-200 @ 2.8
Picture 2: 50mm @ 1.6
Picture 3: 50mm @ 2.2
Picture 4: 50mm @ 2.2
Picture 5&6 (All four images): 70-200 @ 2.8
Picture 7,8,9 (the 3 horizontal of kids): 50mm @ 1.6
Picture 10A: 50mm @ 1.4
Picture 10B: 70-200 @ 2.8
Picture 11 (kids running b&w): 70-200 @ 2.8
Picture 12: All 4 at 50mm @ 1.6
Picture 13A: 50mm @ 1.4
Picture 13B: 70-200 @ 2.8
Picture 14: All 4 at 50mm @ 1.4
Picture 15: 50mm @ 1.4
Picture 16: 70-200 @ 2.8

K! So I do stop up a bit on some. Here's my rule of thumb(s). It all depends on distance, and how many layers of people you have. I generally try to position everyone on the same plane of focus, but if I don't or can't, I stop up (see picture 3 and 4…there were multiple "layers", so I shot at 2.2). Also, if I'm at least 15 feet from my subject, I know I can almost always shoot at 1.4, unless there's a HUGE difference between the front and back person. Make sense? I hope so. Sorry for the long winded reply. I'm probably going to do a blog post soon on the difference of shooting at 50 vs 200.

Laura - Hi Nate!

Thanks for the rundown of all the metadata – you got me thinking. I too have the 70-200 but to date have only used it at weddings. From the looks of your photos, I think next summer I'm going to give her a little more attention as a portrait lens too.

I know you've mentioned you and Luisa have two cameras. Do you shoot with the 50 on one and the 70-200mm on the your D3[s?] or do you swap lenses as needed? By using the 50 on a crop sensor, the distance between you and the subjects increases, which would make using 1.4 or 1.6 easier with groups. Interesting!

This family has a great sense of style! I really love it.

Coopers

Had a really fun shoot yesterday at a beautiful house! The Coopers are great friends of ours and it was great to photograph their family. Kyle even surprised his family with a golden retriever puppy that was honestly adorable. My wife was hooked. These are just a few from the shoot…enjoy!
