Wells Family

Luisa and I recently returned home from photographing a wedding in Aruba, and while travel is nice, and Aruba was MORE than wonderful, it is so great to come home. I love where I live, and I love the fall. The leaves for the past few weeks have been a gorgeous blend of colors. Right…

Ken and Jen Perkes - These are great, Nate! My favorites: First one on the bridge [great lines!]; kids running in front of parents [pure delight!]; and the black and white of the husband and wife [still very much in love!]. The rest are nice too, but those are some of my favorites. Beautiful family! Amazing photographer!

Laura - Beautiful work Nate! The colors are stunning. Here in MN, we are way past our peak of fall colors – we're in the middle of 60+ mph winds and three days of straight rain.

I know you have said you often shoot wide open at 1.4 on your 50. With these family shots, are you stopping up or still at 1.4. Everyone seems in focus so I'm guessing you stop up some.

Very awesome work!

10/26/2010 - 3:12 pm

Nate Perkes - Awesome questions Laura. You actually got me curios, so I went back to check the Metadata of each photo and I'll include it here. I'll treat each group of photos as one, whether it's one up, two up or four up. I shot A LOT of this session with my 70-200 which I ALWAYS leave wide open no matter what, since it's a 2.8, and I'm usually using it at 200mm.

Picture 1: 70-200 @ 2.8
Picture 2: 50mm @ 1.6
Picture 3: 50mm @ 2.2
Picture 4: 50mm @ 2.2
Picture 5&6 (All four images): 70-200 @ 2.8
Picture 7,8,9 (the 3 horizontal of kids): 50mm @ 1.6
Picture 10A: 50mm @ 1.4
Picture 10B: 70-200 @ 2.8
Picture 11 (kids running b&w): 70-200 @ 2.8
Picture 12: All 4 at 50mm @ 1.6
Picture 13A: 50mm @ 1.4
Picture 13B: 70-200 @ 2.8
Picture 14: All 4 at 50mm @ 1.4
Picture 15: 50mm @ 1.4
Picture 16: 70-200 @ 2.8

K! So I do stop up a bit on some. Here's my rule of thumb(s). It all depends on distance, and how many layers of people you have. I generally try to position everyone on the same plane of focus, but if I don't or can't, I stop up (see picture 3 and 4…there were multiple "layers", so I shot at 2.2). Also, if I'm at least 15 feet from my subject, I know I can almost always shoot at 1.4, unless there's a HUGE difference between the front and back person. Make sense? I hope so. Sorry for the long winded reply. I'm probably going to do a blog post soon on the difference of shooting at 50 vs 200.

M. Emmett Townsend - Nate, you amaze me! Thank you for the uplift, I needed it tonight…

Be well, your already well blessed.

Laura - Hi Nate!

Thanks for the rundown of all the metadata – you got me thinking. I too have the 70-200 but to date have only used it at weddings. From the looks of your photos, I think next summer I'm going to give her a little more attention as a portrait lens too.

I know you've mentioned you and Luisa have two cameras. Do you shoot with the 50 on one and the 70-200mm on the your D3[s?] or do you swap lenses as needed? By using the 50 on a crop sensor, the distance between you and the subjects increases, which would make using 1.4 or 1.6 easier with groups. Interesting!

This family has a great sense of style! I really love it.

10/27/2010 - 5:44 pm

Gavin Wade - What a fun family! Great locations! Check out those fall colors! Definitely don't have that around here…jealous! haha. Awesome work Nate

Wendy - Great work, Nate! And THANK YOU for including your settings. Beautiful family and amazing location.

Cameron Leung - Great stuff! My fiance and I love the fall and you have seasons where you are at and beautiful scenery! Keep up the great work.

Life Thru the Macro: The Wind and the ‘BAM’…

My first introduction to using a ‘reflector’ was on our engagement shoot 3 years ago with Nate’s Mom who ALSO happens to be an amazing photographer. It was a cold and cloudy day in February and we were on the beach in NH. In our family, this so-called ‘reflector’ had been christened with the name…

Laura - What an awesome image! I'd love to know more info about using the flash with the reflector!

10/25/2010 - 3:10 pm

Nate Perkes - Hi Laura, thanks so much!! I appreciate it a ton. So typically, I shoot through an umbrella, but didn't have it with me in Aruba, so I had to improvise, and I shot my flash through the diffusion material of the reflector (it's one of those 5-in-1 reflectors). Poor Luisa, picture her trying to hold both a 4 foot reflector and flash, both angling the right way and the right distance apart, with crazy wind. She's a champ! ; )

10/26/2010 - 2:45 pm

Laura - She is a champ, wow! Well, the photo is beautiful, so much worth the work to get them. Can't wait to see more from the aruba wedding.

Anonymous - I have to share that watching Nate and Luisa work together was such a joy! The memory of trying to pose and laughing as Nate and Luisa were snapping away with her trying to hold that (excuse my lack if knowledge in the technical photographer world) big circle thingy (lol) was one of my favorite memories! It was just to me a wonderful site and memory! I get a smile in my heart when I remember…… :)

Larry+Katie Engagement Session

I know it’s been said many times before, but I truly love what I do. For three main reasons: First, taking pictures is just fun and amazing, and hard and challenging, and rewarding, and crazy exciting. I love it! Second, people trust me to document some of the most important events in their life, and…

Victoria de Martigny - Great shots Nate! Love reading your blog posts and the stories behind the images and what inspires you. You did a great job capturing the real, natural emotion between Larry & Katie and you picked some awesome locations for the shoot. Keep 'em coming!

10/19/2010 - 9:05 am

R.E. ~ - I love this session entirely! Captured so naturally, it shows love, love, love. Cute couple!
Beautiful location too!

10/19/2010 - 11:23 am

Katie Russo - Thank you Nate they are beautiful! At least your eyes open all the way, take not of my right eye…lazy! AAAhhhhh! It was so much fun!

10/19/2010 - 11:55 am

Kerrie Mitchell - The eye thing! I do that too, but it was something I picked up from another photographer when I used to photograph formal portraits on cruise ships. Keeping that other eye open helps you to catch a blink, not sure how exactly but it works! The looking derranged part is just a downside!!

Loving the shots too! They look like they had a blast :)

10/19/2010 - 6:58 pm

Let it Shine Photography - Nate!! Nice work! I recognize all those spots! You do great work!

10/20/2010 - 1:23 am

Audrey - Love these images Nate :) Awesome work!

10/20/2010 - 6:54 am

Kate Perkes - Nate,
Love all the different angles you took in all these shots. There is hardly a picture that is centered or straight on. It makes it interesting to look at every picture. I was drawn the most to the one where Kate is looking straight at the camera and her eyes look fiercely green. WAY COOL!

11/05/2010 - 3:08 am

Anonymous - I just felt I relived a bit of their journey thru your eyes in these photos…just amazing!

Life Thru the Macro: Dream Together…

In the depths of delectability, half way through my tub of ‘Imagine Whirled Peace’ Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, I found this: Nate was sleeping at the moment [yes, that might have been a pregnant woman's confession to sneaking midnight delicacies], so as opposed to sharing that moment with him, I shared it with his…

Victoria de Martigny - I have not visited your blog in a while and it looks like I've missed some GREAT stuff! I'm so happy that you & Luisa are shooting together more often – and that Luisa hijacked the blog with this post :)

The shots from James & Shannon's wedding are gorgeous!!! Fabulous job. You are already going placed my friend. Well done!!

Before&After

For some reason, I always love seeing how other photographers edit their photos. What their image looks like straight out of the camera, and how they get to the final product. Today, I’d like to share a few of my own, and my editing process and very basic workflow. But first…a few notes: First. I…

another great post nate.. running out right now but looking forward to having a proper dive in this weekend..

have a good one brother!

Carissa - Thanks for sharing!

10/15/2010 - 1:06 pm

Laura - The last part about overdoing the vignette when you first learned how made me laugh. I did the SAME thing and now, it drives me bonkers. The same when portrait studios [like the ones in Wal Mart] put a white vignette around the edges. Eeeee… Thanks for sharing your tips. I have to say, your SOOC shots are fantastic.

10/15/2010 - 1:15 pm

Nate Perkes - @Laura, Thanks so much! And SERIOUSLY! Those white vignettes kill me! The other one that I forgot to add to the list was the Skin Softening…when I first learned that trick…HMMM!!! All my clients looked like porcelain dolls! With ZERO texture to their face at all. Double Yuck…seriously, it irks me now when I see the over glossified skin. But I can't say I've never done it!

: )

10/15/2010 - 6:00 pm

Mary Riordan - Thank you for sharing! I love these types of posts =)

10/20/2010 - 8:34 pm

Gem - Thanks for the hot tip on luminance! I also use Aperture 3 for everything and I really love it. Your post confirmed some of the techniques I have been using with Levels. Thanks so much for that. The luminance trick is amazing!

Lynchy - Great post Nate!
Subtle. That's my favourite kind of PP.

You have given me something to play with now though.

Cheers :)

James+Shannon Wedding

When she was only 14, Shannon was the only girl of her age to attend Senior High Church Camp. Understandably, she was nervous about going alone, but really wanted to go…so she did. She got to the camp in McCall, and luckily found Rebecca, a friend she had not seen for a long time. She…

Kate Perkes - Nate
Georgeous shots! So many good ones to choose from. But I think my fav. is of the bride and her face is in focus and her dress is not, and your standing above her, I also love the picture of her and her brides maids, I love the color, and I love the spacing. You can tell they are super inlove and I am sure that was the best part.

10/12/2010 - 4:54 pm

Ken and Jen Perkes - Nate: I know I'm always saying this with each successive wedding . . . but this is your BEST WORK YET!!! You have beautifully documented this couple's incredible love and joy. There are too many AMAZING shots to single them out . . . but I can't help but comment on a few: All of the groomsmen shots are awesome; the first three black and whites of the bride are stunningly beautiful [way to go Luisa on the third one . . . and on the great photo of the groom's first look!].

The black and whites of the bride looking over the grooms shoulder and the groom looking over the bride's shoulder are classic! Again, nice job Luisa on getting the rarer look of the groom! It may be my favorite shot of the day! But then there is that amazing shot between these two–definitely a favorite!

Okay, there are too many to mention! I love Luisa's shot of them climbing up to the vineyard! [And I still have four or five more that are signature shots worthy of high praise!] Truly a beautiful couple! And a beautiful venue. You can feel so good on having wonderfully captured their beautiful day.

CONGRATULATIONS on a GREAT JOB!!!

Life Thru the Macro: Take One for the Team…

Much of my involvement in Nate’s photography, until recently, has strictly been audience based. I observe and critique, with my very inexperienced eye, the work that he brings home everyday and strive to be the BEST cheerleader imaginable [even though I am not one for mini skirts or backflips]. While Nate was in Seattle with…
